Visiting the Little Germany of Argentina

In 2024, I was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which allowed me to act as a citizen diplomat during my time abroad. As part of a service project to raise awareness about the scholarship, this article was written to high-school students in Nebraska in collaboration with Reach the World.

A Trip to Villa General Belgrano, the Little Germany of Argentina!

How far did I travel this week?:

I traveled 47 miles to Villa General Belgrano. Other than that, I mostly walked around town close to my neighborhood.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I've traveled to Mendoza (~427 miles by bus), Buenos Aires (~402 miles flying), and Villa General Belgrano (~47 miles by bus) for a grand total of 876 miles in my first 45 days here in Argentina.

How did I get around this week?:

I take a van to school 4 days a week, I usually take Remis (an Argentine Taxi company) when I visit the center of town and I walk whenever I need to go to the supermarket. 

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place was definitely Villa General Belgrano. The whole town was designed with German architecture and they had lots of dessert shops selling authentic chocolates. They also had a German festival in the center of town with live music, traditional dances, and German cuisine. 

Other Travel News from this week:

I don't have much else this week! I walked to my local nail salon and also visited a huge mall called Patio Olmos in downtown Cordoba.

How was the weather this week?:

It was mostly hot this week, so I was melting as usual! We also had one REALLY rainy day on Wednesday, and a couple cloudy and windy days, which were a nice change.

What animals did I see this week? :

I've seen cats, dogs, pigeons, and a Carancho (a bird called a crested caracara in English)

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

The view of Villa General Belgrano from the top of Cerro de la Virgen (The Hill of the Virgin) was amazing.

Other Nature News from this week:

On Wednesday, it rained so much that our school building flooded and classes ended early. Students had to wade through a giant puddle of water just to exit the building!
