Introduction to Public Health: This class taught me the value and importance of public health. I learned how socioeconomics, behavior, and policy affect an individual's health outcomes. I also learned how being knowledgeable about public health and holistic care can make me a better health care professional.

Human Health and Disease: I learned about the signs, symptoms, and treatments for both chronic and infectious diseases. I worked on many group projects about various human health topics like relationships, violence prevention, sleep, drug abuse, and stress.

Overview of Health Care Systems: I learned about the structure of the U.S. healthcare system, (including the different providers, provider organizations, payers, and patients involved) as well as how it differs from healthcare in other nations. I learned about the history and evolution of hospital care and insurance, as well as the legislature involved. I learned about the different types of ethics and how ethics is used in healthcare.

Epidemiology: I learned about the history of epidemiology, epidemiological measures of disease, epidemiological study designs, and disease prevention. I solved a variety of formula-based epidemiology problems such as finding the death rate, incidence, prevalence, and relative risk of a disease. I presented an infographic about a relevant health topic in the news using vocabulary learned in the course.

Debunking Health Pseudoscience: In this honors seminar, I learned about historical and modern day pseudoscience, logical fallacies, 19th century medical advertisements, the rise of alternative medicine, as well as science denialism and fake news.

Determinants of Health Behavior: I learned about health behavior in the context of public health. I learned about common theories and models used to identify factors that affect health behavior and behavior change. For my final project, I wrote a literature review titled: Dietary Behaviors in African American & Hispanic Communities.

Research and Evaluation Strategies for Public Health: I learned about the different types of research strategies that exist and how they applied to the public health field. I learned about potential careers in research from practicing professionals. I worked with a group to create a data poster about the relationship between diabetes and physical activity level.

Spanish for Health Professionals: I learned about important medical terminology in Spanish. I also learned about different aspects of interacting with and treating Spanish-speaking patients. In addition, I became aware of some of the unique barriers to healthcare that Spanish-speaking patients face in the U.S. healthcare system.

Infectious Diseases & Exposure Management: I learned about the different types of communicable diseases in the U.S. and throughout the world. I participated in various clinical labs where I practiced skills such as donning & doffing PPE and IV and catheter insertion on various models.

Women's Health: I learned about the various diseases and conditions that primarily affect women, how women interact with the healthcare system, and unique barriers that women face. I learned about how global policy affects women's health as well as various global issues in women's health. I completed a group project that researched endometriosis.

Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals: I learned about the different types of healthcare systems that exist in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain. I participated in a mock panel in which I discussed the quality and transparency of healthcare systems in Latin America. I wrote an in-depth literature review about the strengths & weaknesses of the healthcare system in Argentina.

Global Health: I learned about various global health issues with a focus on sustainable develop goals and the social determinants of health.  As part of a semester long project, I researched the health care system, political and social issues, and health disparities within the country of Bolivia.

Health and the Hispanic Community: I learned about the demographics, culture, health behaviors, and barriers to healthcare of the Latino community in the United States. I analyzed the social determinants that impact the prevalence of food insecurity within Latin communities in the United States by writing an essay.
